      Meet Maritime's Captains

Way to go Jim Laura. He and the crew up at Maritime came up with the design on these bad boys and its a doozey. I thought I swiped a pair until Jim grabbed them just before he left, but more importantly, you guys should take time out to meet three remarkable young men.

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 30, 2010) – SUNY Maritime men’s lacrosse head coach Daniel Lawrence is pleased to announce the captains for the upcoming 2011 season: seniors Keith Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) and Taylor Beaudette (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park). The tri-captains were chosen by the coaching staff for their great leadership and ability to put the team first.

Messina is a three-year member of the team and a first-year captain. During his career, he has played in 24 games, starting four and has made 81 saves and has a career .554 save percentage. Besides being a great ball stopper, Keith is adapt at playing out of the net, which is evident in his 19 ground balls during last year’s season, in which he was the team’s No. 2 keeper. Keith is a Marine Transportation major and is planning on using his Coast Guard License to sail on commercial ships after graduation. Keith has held numerous leadership positions on campus that will help him in his new position with the team. He has been a Squad Leader and a Chief Section IDO for the freshmen Indoctrination program. He is currently the 1st Battalion Physical training officer.

Hanratty is a three-year member of the team and a three year starter. He has amassed 20 goals, 14 assists and 39 ground balls in his career while playing in 24 games and starting 19. Michael began his career as a midfielder, where he played on the first midfield line. Last year, he switched from midfield to attack. He will be looked upon to lead the Privateer offense from the attack position this year. Michael is Majoring in Marine Business and Commerce and is also working towards getting his Coast Guard Deck License. He is planning on working on commercial ships after graduation.

Beaudette is a three year starter. This will be his second year as captain. He has been the team’s starting LSM the last three years. Last season, a foot injury limited him to playing in just 12 games, where he collected 24 ground balls and forced eight turnovers. In his career, T.J. has scored two goals and assisted on three, collected 168 ground balls and caused 28 turnovers. For his play, he has been selected to the All-Skyline Conference First Team in 2009. T.J. began his leadership training on campus in the NROTC Unit Marine Corps option in his freshman year. He has held numerous leadership positions in the unit including Squad Leader, Platoon Guide, India Company Platoon Sergeant, Platoon Commander and in his final semester he will be Battalion Sergeant Major. T.J. is Majoring in International Transportation and Trade and he is hoping to be a 2nd Lt. in an Infantry Battalion upon graduation.

These three captains should provide great leadership for a team looking to build on last season’s accomplishments of making the conference playoffs. The Privateers begin their season at home against the Warriors from Lycoming College on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2010 at 1 p.m.

So this is Maverik's latest composite shaft. We just received it in the warehouse today, so be sure to look for it in the stores later this week. A fellow LU employee commented that it's heavy in comparison to other metal shafts, but perhaps this lends it to having better durability? I guess that's where you come in. Pick one up and let us know how it plays!

I'm loving these handles. I just wish they debuted more colors. Maybe we can work on that.

    • Reebok's Full 10k Watermelon Challenge

Brodie Merrill, Matt Alrich, Zack Greer and Mark Steenhuis are like the Bill Nye 'The Science Guy' of the lacrosse world right here. We put up the promo for this over the weekend, but here's the extended cut. You can't deny the science of Reebok's 10k wand.
